Reflection and Professional Development

The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.

Rationale 9: The word “school” needs to have a new meaning. Learning no longer has to take place in the typical brick and mortar building. Individual needs of students can be met through the involvement of global and community resources.

KSD:

9.K.2 The teacher understands critical frameworks for reflecting on teaching practice (e.g. frameworks for social, cultural, and philosophical foundations of education).

As a society, we are shifting from the Industrial Age of assembly lines, to the Information Age where knowledge it at our fingertips. Children today are “digital natives” meaning they were born into digital technologies such as computers, iPods, and cell phones. Schools need to keep up with technology to meet the needs of the 21st century learner.

9.S.3 The teacher seeks out professional literature, and other resources to support his/her own development as a learner and a teacher.

I continue to search for new and effective ways to integrate technology into the classroom. Reading up to date literature on technology and collaborating with colleagues keeps me abreast of the most innovative teaching practices in the field of technology.

9.D.4 The teacher is committed to seeking out, developing, and continually refining practices that address the individual needs of students.

To meet the individual needs of students I partake in professional development opportunities offered within my district as well as collaborate with staff members. Outside of school I am constantly researching new ways to motivate my students and get them excited about learning through internet searches, online professional groups, and professional literature.
